High-powered Central women’s offense picks up soccer win

Dutch have eight different goal scorers in victory

PELLA — Eight goals from eight different players allowed the Central College women's soccer team to wallop Ripon University (Wis.) 8-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch (1-1-0) took the lead four minutes in against the Red Hawks (0-2-0) and never relinquished it when Grace Coates (freshman, forward, Marion) became the first of five freshman goal scorers, taking an assistant from Elena Pinto (freshman, midfielder, Kent, Wash., Federal Way HS).

"Grace got us off to a good start," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "I was happy for her to get her first collegiate goal."

Amber Santana (freshman, midfielder, Indio, Calif., Shadow Hills HS), Abby Frey (sophomore, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS), and Jacie Borman (junior, forward, Eagan, Minn.) added unassisted goals in the first half before Jadyn Jacobs (freshman, forward, Washington Ill.) notched the fifth and final goal of the first half courtesy of an Abby Sutberry (sophomore, Lee's Summit, Mo., St. Michael HS) assist.

Pinto, Sutberry and Nicole Lutz (freshman, Center Point, Center Point-Urbana HS) added three more goals in the second half. Alyssa Knuth (junior, defender, Benton Harbor, Mich., St. Joseph HS), Emma Rodman (freshman, Mount Vernon) and Abby Gonzalez (freshman, Adel, ADM HS) had the assists on those three goals.

"Anytime you have eight different scorers, it's a rare accomplishment," Kobyliski said. "It shows how we play within the team game. I couldn't be happier for all of them."

Central used a total of 32 players in the contest.

"It's good to get as many people in as possible," Kobylinski said. "It was a total team effort."

Coming on as a substitute, goalkeeper Sheila Horstmann (junior, West Des Moines, Valley HS) recorded a save on Ripon's only shot.

"She saved a breakaway one on one," Kobylinski said. "I was happy to see her get a chance to make a play."

The Dutch are back in action on Sunday at Cornell College for a 4 p.m. match.
