Second-half surge for Central women in soccer victory

Three goals in three minutes for Central

PELLA — Notching three goals in three minutes, the Central College women's soccer team broke a halftime tie and defeated Monmouth College (Ill.) 5-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Central (5-1-0) won its fifth consecutive match of the year while the Fighting Scots (0-5-0) are searching for their first win.

Tied 1-1 after 45 minutes, Central's offense awoke in the second half. The barrage started with Abby Frey's (sophomore, midfielder, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) free kick goal at the 53:21 mark.

Rachel Daniels (junior, forward, Geneseo, Ill.) made it 3-1 at 54:10 on a Jacie Borman (junior, midfielder, Eagan, Minn.) assist and then Borman made it 4-1 at 55:53 from a Grace Coates (freshman, forward, Marion) assist.

"We have the ability to score when we put our head down and play our brand of soccer," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "We saw that good things can happen and good things can happen in a short amount of time."

Borman now has two goals and three assists on the season while Daniels score her first goal of the young season.

"It was nice for Jacie for to get in and give us some good minutes and get on the scoresheet," Kobylinski said. "She's been a good leader."

"I'm just as happy for Rachel to get a goal. She's worked really hard on the outside and she was needing that goal. We worked on some things yesterday in practice and she scored on that exact play we practiced."

Coates tallied her fourth goal of the season in the first half with a Kirsten Small (freshman, midfielder, Spencer) assist. She made it brace with her fifth goal of the season in the 85th minute.

Central closes out its four-game home stand against the College of St. Benedict (Minn.) on Sunday at 2 p.m.

"They're one of the best schools in their conference," Kobylinski said. "We've played some of the best teams from a few difference conferences. We're happy to be 5-1 and but we're not satisfied. We're trying to take it one game at a time."
