PELLA— Freshman midfielder
Abby Frey (freshman, Mesa, Ariz., Desert Ridge HS) notched a first-half brace but it was not enough in a Central College women's soccer team loss to Simpson College 4-2 Wednesday afternoon.
Frey's first tally pulled Central (1-2-0, 1-2-0 American Rivers Conference) even at 1-1 in the 20th minute. She added another in the 41st that gave Central a 2-1 lead.
"She showed what she can when she puts her shoulder over it and has a touch away from a defender to rattle off a shot," coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "There's not a lot of players in this league I feel can have a strike like she can. She had two immaculate goals."
The Storm equalized in the final minute of the first half and added another two goals in the second half to give the game its final score.
"Simpson's a tough opponent," Kobylinski said. "We're still a pretty young team and we're working through some of those young team moments."
Katie Wang (senior, forward Brooklyn Park, Minn., Park Center HS) was credited with the assist on Frey's first goal and
Jessica Altman (senior, forward, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) had the assist on the second goal.
Central goalkeeper
Leann Grandia (junior, West Des Moines Valley HS) faced 17 shot attempts by the Storm and made nine saves.
The Dutch travel to Dubuque Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
"It doesn't get any easier in this league," Kobylinski said. "It's one of the toughest in the nation but I think that's why our players come here, to play against that competition. I'm still really confident in what we can do against Dubuque and the rest of the season."
