DUBUQUE — Offensively, the Central College baseball team was not able to string enough runs together and was swept 3-1, 7-1 Saturday night against Loras College.
The Dutch (9-17, 6-14 American Rivers Conference) got a pair of stellar pitching performances from its starters against Loras (17-9, 12-8 conference). Game one's starting pitcher Landon Vander Leest (junior, Pella) scattered three runs on five hits.
"He kept us in the game," coach Matt Schirm said. "That's really all we can ask for."
In game two, Caleb Evans (sophomore, Davenport, Central HS) went 5.0 innings, striking out six and yielding two earned runs. It was the first career varsity start for Evans.
"He did well," Schirm said. "I'm very pleased with his performance."
Both teams had 13 hits but the Duhawks scored 10 times and the Dutch crossed home twice.
"I think we hit better than what the scoreboard indicated," Schirm said. "The wind was blowing in so we had a lot of batted balls that probably would have been home runs las night"
Center fielder Jared Kampf (junior, Peoria, Ariz., Mounain Ridge HS) only had one hit on the day but caught the attention of Coach Schirm none the less.
"He hit the ball hard a lot today and didn't have much to show for it." Schirm said." We hit the ball right at the defense."
Third baseman Quinn Miller (freshman, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) was a team-best 4-for-7 in the doubleheader.
