Errors cost Dutch in volleyball defeat

Central outhits opponent in loss

LINCOLN, NEB. — Despite having more kills than its opponents, the Central College volleyball team was swept Thursday night 25-19, 25-9, 25-22 by Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Central's (1-3, 1-3 American Rivers Conference) 32 kills came with 25 errors and .060 hitting percentage while the Prairie Wolves (2-2, 2-2 conference) only had nine attack errors with 28 kills and .184 hitting percentage. The Dutch also had 12 reception errors.

"Our first contact struggled tonight," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "It limited our opportunities offensively and made things too predictable.

"We made a lot of mental errors and it is hard to bounce back from that."

Setter Amanda Smith (sophomore, Tipton) notched a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs.

For the fourth match in a row, outside hitter Krissa Larson (junior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) led the team with nine kills. Landry Luhring (junior, libero, Grundy Center) had a team-high 13 digs.

Making her debut, outside hitter Gracie Daniels (freshman, Broken Arrow, Okla.) had six kills, five digs and two service aces. Middle hitter Kayleigh Fite (senior, Florissant, Mo., Trinity Catholic HS) also had six kills.

"This team has a lot of talent and athleticism and heart," Czipri said. "We just have to figure out how to dig deep and pass to win, swing to win and defend to win. We are very capable and our staff truly believes in who we have, but we need to learn how to play to win."

Central hosts Loras College Saturday night at 7 p.m. in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
