LINCOLN, NEB. — The Central College wrestling team won the first two and the last three matches by fall in a dominant 42-12 win at Nebraska Wesleyan University Thursday night.
The Dutch improve to 5-2 overall (1-1 American Rivers Conference) and the Prairie Wolves are now 2-2 (0-2 A-R-C).
The No. 10 wrestler at 125 pounds in NCAA Division III,
Shandon Akeo (fifth-year, Honolulu, Hawaii, Kapolei HS) started the night with a fall at 4:32.
Chase Poston (senior, Olympia, Wash.) followed with a fall at 1:30.
"We got off to a great start," coach
Eric Van Kley said. "Those two are seniors that have wrestled a ton of matches.
Central put an exclamation point on the night with falls at 184, 197 and 285 pounds.
Cooper Stigsell (senior, Litchfield Park, Ariz., Verrado HS) earned his pin at 184 in 3:46.
Gage Linahon (sophomore, 197 pounds, Newton) beat the first-period buzzer for a fall at 2:54 and
Samuel Zook (senior, 285 pounds, Oak Harbor, Wash.) closed out the night with a 2:31 fall.
"We had two more seniors on the back end to close it out," Van Kley said. "I think getting back to normalcy this year, senior leadership has been really important."
Duncan Delzell (sophomore, Burlington) gave Central a 10-2 major decision at 149 pounds and
Eric Santana (senior, Palm Desert, Calif.) earned a 6-1 decision at 133 pounds.
"Eric stepped in and got a big win for us," Van Kley said. "It was a night where our seniors really stepped up."
Central is off until hosting a triangular with Schreiner University (Texas) and St. John's University (Minn.) on Friday, January 7.
"Our goal the first semester was to continually get better," Van Kley said. "I thought we did a good job of that. I'm proud of our work and commitment. We're excited for the second half. Our best efforts are still ahead of us."
