Central men drop conference basketball road opener

Dutch hit second-half dry spell on offense

DUBUQUE — A late run by the University of Dubuque put the Central College men's basketball team away in a 76-58 loss Saturday afternoon in the first American Rivers Conference road game.

With 7:38 remaining in the second half, Central (3-6, 0-2 conference) had pulled the score to within four when Sam Beatty's (junior, Mount Pleasant) free throws made it 57-53. Dubuque (5-3, 2-1 conference) would go on a 19-5 run for the rest of the game to bring the game to its final score.

"It was a four-point game and then we hit a dry spell," coach Craig Douma said. "They made plays down the stretch and we did not."

Dubuque held a 21-2 advantage in points off turnovers and a 15-4 advantage in second-chance points.

"They are a very mature, upperclassmen team," Douma said. "The second-chance points and points off turnovers made the difference."

Kade Terrell (senior, guard, Montrose, Colo.) was Central's leading scorer with 10 points, all scored in the first half. He also had a team-high four assists. Terrell was one of three Dutch players to hit a pair of 3-pointers. Guards Kaleb Brand (sophomore, Mount Vernon) and Drew Edwards (junior, Eden Prairie, Minn.) each had eight points.

"We were 9-22 from the 3-point line, which was a bright spot for us," Douma said. "Overall, we shot the ball from the field well. We just didn't get to the free throw line enough."

Beatty and forward Caden Mauck (fifth-year, Kansas City, Mo., Blue Springs South HS) also had eight points apiece.

Central's final game before the Christmas break is Saturday at 4 p.m. at home against Coe College.

"We're only two games into the conference season," Douma said. "We've got to come back with a good week of practice next week for a big home game."
