PELLA — In its final dual of the season, the Central College women's tennis team was defeated by Wartburg College 5-4 Saturday morning.
Central (8-7 overall) finishes the American Rivers Conference season with a 6-2 record and despite the loss are still in line to finish second in the league standings. The Dutch were coming off an 8-1 loss Friday against Luther College.
"Emotionally, we didn't have a lot left in the tank after yesterday," coach
Ryun Ferrell said. We fought as hard as we could fight and Wartburg just had our number today.'
The Dutch had a 2-1 lead after doubles, seeing victories from the No. 2 pairing of
Bronwyn Metcalf (senior, Pella) and
Jennifer Larson (freshman, Johnston) 8-1 and the No. 3 pairing of
Katie Larson (senior, Fort Madison) and
Sarah Schirm (senior, Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) 8-5.
Katie Larson also won 6-1, 6-0 in No. 4 singles.
"Katie is a steady player," Ferrell said. "You always know what you are going to get and she does a great job. It was a nice, solid day for her."
Maddie Hartley (senior, Clarinda) had the final point for Central, winning 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Central's final competition of the fall is next Friday and Saturday at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships in Sioux City.
"We'll give them the rest they need to get themselves ready to go," Ferrell said. "It's a fun event to play. I'm looking forward to watching them cap their season off."
