Central picks up two volleyball wins at Knox

Dutch go 2-0 in triangular

GALESBURG, ILL. — After winning its opening match via forfeit against Grinnell College, the Central College volleyball swept Knox College (Ill.) 25-14, 25-17, 32-30 Saturday afternoon.

Central (14-8) and Grinnell were in the middle of the second set when a power outage turned out the lights in the gym at Knox. Rather than waiting for the power to be restored, Grinnell elected to leave and match officials gave Central a forfeit victory. The Dutch had won the first set 25-13 and were tied 16-16 in the second.

After waiting for nearly an hour for power to be restored, Central defeated Knox in straight sets in the second match

"This weekend was filled with lots of unique challenges that could have given way to excuses," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "Restarting with a new match was an opportunity to regroup. I'm pleased that we fond a way to get it done when we were pushed."

Hallie Uhlig (senior, middle hitter, Colorado Springs, Colo., Palmer Ridge HS) had seven kills on 10 attempts between the two contests. She was also a part of five blocks.

"Hallie had a great day," Czipri said. "We love it when we can get our middles involved."

Gracie Pierson (freshman, outside hitter, Lake City, Minn.) had nine kills against Knox and eight against Grinnell. Taryn Hintz (sophomore, Primghar, South O'Brien HS) notched a combined six on 14 attempts.

"It's been great to see Gracie and Taryn starting to find their game," Czipri said.

Landry Luhring (senior, Grundy Center) had 20 digs against Knox. Setters Adisyn Illg (junior, Johnsburg, Ill.) and Amanda Smith (junior, Tipton) each had 15 assists against the Prairie Fire.

The Dutch travel to Coe for a 6 p.m. match on Friday.
