Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mauck hits 28 in Central men's basketball loss

Flinn adds 24 bit Dubuque controls boards for 97-82 decision

DUBUQUE—Forward Caden Mauck (junior, Kansas City, Mo., Blue Springs South HS) and guard Adam Flinn (junior, St. Louis, Mo., Lafayette) combined for 52 points but the Central College men's basketball team was still outscored 97-82 at the University of Dubuque Wednesday night.

Mauck notched his ninth double-double of the year and the 12th of his career with a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. He was nine-of-13 from the floor.

"Caden played really well," coach Craig Douma said. "He played 34 minutes. That's a lot to ask from your (post)."

Flinn added 24 points, knocking down three 3-point buckets. Guard Kade Terrell (sophomore, Olathe, Colo., Montrose HS) followed with 12 points.

"Kade played so hard on both ends of the floor," Douma said. "He played defense, he battled, he rebounded. He's outsized but there was no question about his effort and heart. He shot the ball well, too."

The Dutch (4-11 overall, 1-5 American Rivers) shot 50.9% from the floor to Dubuque's 45.2% but surrendered 16 offensive boards and were outrebounded 45-33.

"Rebounding was the biggest stat of the game," Douma said. "They had 46 points in the paint. Dubuque's a good team. They have size and they have depth. They go nine-deep pretty easy. I was impressed.

"They did a good job of getting us out of our offense."

Dubuque (10-5 overall, 3-3 conference) jumped out to a 22-8 lead and was still up 33-20 with 7:46 left in the half when Central staged a 16-2 burst for a 36-35 advantage with 2:14 remaining. But it was the final lead of the game for the Dutch, who trailed 45-40 at intermission and saw Dubuque quickly break it open in the second half.

But Central brought the intensity Douma thought was sorely lacking in a 91-71 loss at Simpson College Saturday.

"We talked a lot about Saturday," he said. "The guys really played hard tonight. I thought there were a lot of positives. All we can control are our effort and attitude and as long as we have those, we've got a chance."

The Dutch make just their second home-court appearance in their last eight games Saturday, meeting No. 11- ranked Nebraska Wesleyan University in a women's-men's twinbill, with the men's game starting at 4 p.m. at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Nebraska Wesleyan is 13-2 overall and 6-0 in the league after escaping at home against Coe College 82-76 Wednesday night. A video webcast and live stats can be accessed via athletics.central.edu. The game will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) and through www.kniakrls.com with Jon Mohwinkle calling the action.
