Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Offense thrives in Central men’s soccer win

PELLA— Tallying up a season-high four goals, the Central College men's soccer team trounced Cornell College 4-1 Tuesday afternoon.

Central (5-0) has started the season unbeaten but are coming off two games where the team has underperformed according to coach Garry Laidlaw.

"We were much more pleased with today's effort," he said. "We didn't really have a lot to complain at halftime, at that point it was about challenging the guys to keep the level high."

Matthew West (freshman, midfielder, Pleasant Hill, Southeast Polk HS)
had a pair of goals in a 20-second time span in the 50th minute, his third and fourth of the season. Charlie Pritchard (freshman, forward, Ankeny) had the assist on both goals.

"Matthew's off to a good start," Laidlaw said. "We're doing some different things with him and he's getting in the right places at the right time."

Nick Ashton (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) and Nathan Casas (sophomore, Cottage Grove, Minn., East Ridge HS) connected for the game's first goal at the 6:50 mark, making Ashton the 11th player to score for Central this season.

"I think one of the things we are most pleased about with this team is how many different goal scorers we've had," Laidlaw said. "I still think there's still a few other guys that haven't gotten on the board yet that have it in them."

The margin of victory allowed Laidlaw to go deep into his bench as 35 different Central players checked into the match.

Jake Dzarnowksi (sophomore, Wheaton Ill., North HS) also connected on a penalty kick in the first half to give Central four goals.

The Dutch have two matches in Minnesota this weekend, starting with a match in Winona against Saint Mary's University on Friday at 7 p.m.

"They are a solid, well-coached team," Laidlaw said. "We know we're going to get a real proper soccer game against them."
