PELLA—Nearly sweeping the distance events, the Central College men's track and field placed second with 121 points at the Monmouth College Fighting Scot Invitational Saturday.
The host school, Monmouth had 243 points to win the team title.
"In general, I think it was a good day," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "It's a great meet to go to. It's a smaller meet so everyone gets opportunities and it goes quick."
The top-five finishers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase all wore a Central uniform, led by freshman
Jeremy Fopma (Marion) in 9 minutes, 35.19 seconds.
Jordan Toomey (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) was second in 9:42.38
In the 1,500-meter run,
Kyle Pape (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert Catholic HS) was first in 4:00.57.
Will DeHaan (freshman, DeWitt, Central HS) was second in 4:07.91 and
Nate Sanders (sophomore, Waukee) was third in 4:11.07.
Cameron Coles (freshman, Farley, Western Dubuque HS) also won the 5,000-meter run in 18:21.54.
Bryant Seuferer (junior, Milo, Southeast Warren HS) was the 200-meter dash runner-up in 2:00.05.
"We dominated the distance events," Sturman said. "Anytime you can win an event it's exciting. We had a lot more runner so it was kind of like time trials for us because we weren't necessarily racing a lot of other people."
Carter Tryon (freshman, Winterset) was on pace for a great time in the 400-meter hurdles before tripping over the eighth hurdle and settling for third (1:02.79).
"Carter did a tumble," Sturman said. "He was on pace for maybe a 56-second race."
Discus thrower
Theo Baldus (freshman, St. Ansgar) was third with a toss of 137 feet, 10 inches.
Nathan Fitzgerald (senior, Elkader, Central HS) was fourth in the shot put (47-4.5) and fifth in the hammer (152-7).
Brock Lewis (freshman, Lathrop, Mo.) had a new personal-best mark of 22-1.5 in the long jump, taking third.
The three-day American Rivers Conference outdoor championships starts next Thursday in Cedar Rapids on the campus of Coe College.
