PELLA — Behind three individual titles on Saturday, the Central College men's track and field team finished as the runner-up at the Central Invitational.
With 158 points, Central was 34 points behind Monmouth College's winning total of 192. Several of the 10 teams in the meet were Division II programs.
"It was an awesome day," coach
Brandon Sturman said. "There was only three Division programs and then a bunch of Division II teams so I think that shows what we can do if we continue to build on the talent and depth we have for the future."
The Lewis brothers both earned top-two finishes in jumping events.
Drake Lewis (sophomore, Lathrop, Mo.) tied for first in the high jump (6 feet, 5.5 inches) and
Brock Lewis (freshman, Lathrop, Mo.) was second in the triple jump (44-9.75).
Jordon Woods (junior, Orland Park, Ill., Carl Sandburg HS) was also fourth in the triple jump (41-6.5)
"We knew they would be good, we've just got to get them into track shape after basketball season," Sturman said. "Both of them will make an impact at conference, they have a lot of potential."
Running his first collegiate 400-meter hurdles,
Carter Tryon (freshman, Winterset) was the champion in a time of 58.47 seconds.
Will Daniels (junior, Geneseo, Ill.) won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.15 seconds.
Drake Lewis was third (16.26) and
Danny Devenuto (freshman, Plainfield, Ill., North HS) was fourth (16.37).
"It's a good time for where we are at right now," Sturman said. "I know he wanted to run faster, but for a freshman to come out and win is definitely a good thing. He's got good technique, we just need to pick up some 400 strength."
Kyle Pape (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert Catholic HS) took the title in the 1,500-meter run, leading the five Central runners who placed.
Bryant Seuferer (junior, Milo, Southeast Warren HS) was fourth (4:07.90,
Jeremy Fopma (freshman, Marion) was fifth (4:08.39),
Will DeHaan (freshman, DeWitt, Central DeWitt HS) was seventh (4:10.32) and
Jordan Toomey (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) was eighth (4:11.96).
"Pape is our strongest runner right now," Sturman said. "He's killing it coming off of indoor nationals and he hasn't lost a step. He also had a nice split in the 4x400-meter relay."
DeHaan was also seventh in the 800-meter run in 2:03.01, just behind
Alec Stahl (freshman, Steamboat Rock, AGWSR HS) in sixth (2:03.00).
Thrower
Nathan Fitzgerald (senior, Elkader, Central HS) added to his big weekend with a fourth-place effort in the shot put (50-0.75) and an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw (148-8).
Devenuto,
Brock Lewis, Tryon and Cory
Suedmeier (junior, Ankeny, Centennial HS) were third in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 43.76 seconds. Suedmeier was also eighth in the 100-meter dash (11.17 seconds).
The Dutch will compete in Des Moines at the Blue Oval Invitational hosted by Drake University next weekend.
