Dutch women fall in tennis dual

TOPEKA, KAN. — A nationally ranked NCAA Division II squad, Washburn University (Kan.), handed the Central College women's tennis team a 7-0 defeat Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 24-rated team in Division II, Washburn is now 9-1 on the season

"We did a lot of good things," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "The Washburn women are really, really deep and really, really good."

Two singles players and one doubles pairing for the Ichabods are ranked in the region.

"It was tough," Ferrell said. "We were playing against sledgehammers, you feel like you can't do anything."

One noteworthy addition to the Dutch lineup has been Bronywn Metcalf (freshman, Pella). Metcalf joined the team in January after transferring to the school. She did not play tennis at her previous institution so she is playing a little bit of a catch up. Metcalf lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and 6-0 with Jenna Stewart (senior, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) at No. 1

"It's been awhile since she's played a ton, but she's going to help" Ferrell said. "She's very athletic and a very talented doubles player. She's an aggressive singles player, which you don't see a lot at this level. She looked great with Jenna at No. 1 doubles. She started slow in the first set of singles, but started to find her feet in the second set. I think we'll get good things from her as the year progresses."

A busy week continues on Saturday when the Dutch host Crown College (Minn.) on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. If weather permits, the match will be held outside at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts.

"From here on out it's basically nothing but Division III competition," Ferrell said. "It'll be good to get back to our level and get used to doing what we need to do. The good thing is the ball is going to be gigantic after these last two days."
