Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

First spring victory for Dutch women’s tennis squad

PELLA — With a 9-0 victory over Crown College (Minn.) on Saturday, the Central College women's tennis team picked up their first win in the opening week of the spring season.

The Dutch (9-7) were able to sweep the Storm (0-6) in their third shutout of the season.

"Crown is a new program and they're still kind of finding their way," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "There's going to be some growing pains for them."

Both of the men's and women's teams from the two schools played inside H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse at the same time. The Dutch women also won 9-0.

"It was fun to play with the two teams side-by-side," Ferrell said.

Getting their first varsity action of the season, Macy Scharff (freshman, Oskaloosa), Kaysey Bos  (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) and Grace Forde (sophomore, Chicago, Ill., Regina Dominican HS) notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots in the singles lineup.

"It's nice to have the kind of depth on your team where you can put a lot of different athletes and feel confident in them being able to get it done," Ferrell said. 'They all played great."

Kirsten Jordan (senior, Clear Lake)
won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Maddie Hartley (freshman, Clarinda) triumphed at No. 2 6-0, 6-1, the same score as Sami Thompson (junior, Knoxville) had at No. 3

Freshmen Bronwyn Metcalf (Pella) and Alyssa Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) had an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles while classmates Katie Larson (Fort Madison) and Sarah Schirm (Cedar Rapids, Xavier HS) shut out their opponents 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Jordan and Cassidy Bos (senior, Geneseo, Ill.) also had an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

A busy weekend is on deck for the Dutch, starting with a 5 p.m. match at Cornell College in Mount Vernon on Friday night. Matches against Northwestern College and Morningside College at home are scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.

"I'm excited about nice weekend," Ferrell said. "It'll be nice to focus on the women. We should have just about everybody back so it will be nice to see what we can do. I'm excited to watch us play because we are young but talented."
