AUBURNDALE, FLORIDA — Catcher
Trevor Kimm (junior, Urbandale) had four hits while second baseman
Chris Riddle (sophomore, Omaha, Neb., Mount Michael HS) knocked in four runs in a 14-1 Central College baseball victory over Mount St. Joseph University (Ohio).
Through five games, the Dutch (4-1) are outscoring opponents 39-9.
"It was a pretty good overall effort," coach
Matt Schirm said. "We did a lot of things on the bases, small-ball type of things that put a lot of pressure on them. We did a good job of executing and it paid off."
It was the first time in Kimm's career to connect on four hits. He had one RBI in the process.
"It was good to see TK get back on track," Schirm said. "He struggled a little bit yesterday but he was able to barrel up more balls today."
Riddle hit a two-run triple in the second and a two-run double in the ninth inning.
"Both of his balls were crushed," Schirm said. "They both went over the outfielder's head and came in big situations. If we can keep getting that type of production from No. 8 hitter that's pretty good.
Getting the start on the mound,
Tanner Wood (senior, Pella) went six strong innings for the win. The senior right struck out five while walking four. He ceded one run on two hits.
"He got into some trouble in the first, walking the bases loaded," Schirm said. "He got out of it and really settled in for the second inning. He did what we needed him to do."
Wood also had a big day at the plate, notching three hits and scoring three times.
Spencer Davidson (sophomore, Des Moines, Lincoln HS), came on for Wood in the last three innings to pick up his first career save by striking out three and forcing four groundouts.
First baseman
Ryan Bouwman (senior, Bloomington, Ill., Normal HS) also drove in three runs with two hits and two walks. He also scored two runs of his own. Centerfielder
Coy Moore (senior, Hamilton, Twin Cedars HS) scored three times after walking twice.
The RussMatt Central Florida Invitational continues Wednesday with a nine-inning affair against Dickinson College (Pa.) at 10:30 a.m. in Auburndale.
