Dutch overcome early struggles for volleyball victory

Three Central hitters reach 10 kills

ROCK ISLAND, ILL.— Losing the opening set and nearly dropping the second the Central College volleyball team rebounded for a 23-25, 27-25, 25-18, 25-18 triumph over Monmouth College Friday night.

The Dutch (17-11) previously swept the Scots (12-14) on September 13.

"We started tonight out pretty slow and sloppy," coach Jeanne Czipri said. "Monmouth is a much improved team. After we cleaned up a few things and dialed in better, we were able to do what we needed to get the win."

Outside hitter Krissa Larson (sophomore, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) led the team with 14 kills. Middle hitter Kayleigh Fite (Florissant, Mo., Trinity Catholic HS) had 12 and right side hitter Erin Dilger (senior, Tinley Park, Ill., Lincoln Way North HS) had 10.

"Three pins getting double-digit kills helped get the offense going," Czipri said.

Fite had a double-double with her 17 digs. She also had four blocks. Setter Alyssa Lewton (sophomore, Ankeny, Centennial HS) also had a double-double with 27 assists and 15 digs.

Czipri cited outside hitter Natalie Gaszynski (freshman, Huntley, Ill.) for her spark late in the contest. She subbed in late in the third set and played the fourth

"Natalie rattling off five kills was great to see," Czipri said.

Leading the team in both categories, Libero Landry Luhring (sophomore, Grundy Center) recorded 29 digs and three service aces. Defensive specialist Alexis Aragon (freshman, Champaign, Centennial HS) had 10 digs.

Central closes out its 2019 season Saturday in a quadrangular at Grinnell College, playing Illinois College at 11 a.m. and Grinnell 1 p.m.
