DUBUQUE — The Central College wrestling team fell 28-12 to No. 8 Loras College in a matchup of ranked teams Tuesday night.
The Dutch (8-2, 1-2 conference), ranked No. 12 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, lost for just the second time this season.
The biggest victory of the night for the Dutch was a fall from 184-
pounder Griffen McBride (sophomore, Pleasantville). After being taken down early, McBride scored a reversal before sticking Javier Soto at 2:08.
"He had the opportunity to get the fall and close the down," coach
Eric Van Kley said. "He did a great job of putting an opponent away and getting the big points."
The first Central wrestler to notch his 20th win of the season,
Rob Areyano (freshman, 149 pounds, Selma, Calif.) won by an 11-4 decision against Adam Valdez.
"He's a pretty dynamic wrestler," Van Kley said. "What we are most proud of is that he's extremely coachable and working hard to improve each week. He showed it tonight by going for big points and big moves, he just keeps attacking."
Entering a dual at 125 pounds for the first time,
Cam Timok (senior, Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage HS) used a late takedown and a riding time point for an 8-6 win. The former 133-pounder is now 15-2 on the year.
"He's really committed to wrestling well at that weight," Van Kley said. "He scored in each period for a consistent effort and he grinded out a hard-fought win."
Central will head to Waverly for the American Rivers Conference duals on Saturday. The Dutch will dual Buena Vista University, University of Dubuque and No. 3 Wartburg College starting at 9 a.m.
"There are things we continue to improve and keep on working hard to get better," Van Kley said.
