PELLA — Despite dramatically winning the statistical battle in the second half, the Central College men's soccer team fell to Iowa Wesleyan University 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
In a game that was originally scheduled for Saturday at 5 p.m on Central's main game field, the contest between the Dutch (0-2) and the Tigers (0-1) was moved back a day and on to the program's narrower practice field.
"I think it was a difficult game due to the fact we changed venues," coach
Garry Laidlaw said. "Because it was a tighter field, it made it a little tougher to play our game.
We weren't able to open the game up as much as we would have liked."
In the second half, Central outshot Iowa Wesleyan 17-2 and had eight corner kicks to zero by the Tigers. Only six of the 22 shots by the Dutch went on frame. The Tigers had seven yellow cards compared to Central's one.
"We had to play a little more direct in the second half and that may be partly why a lot of our shots didn't go on frame," Laidlaw said.
"At the same time, I thought we completely outworked them in the second half. The message at half time was that they were outworking us. It wasn't a tactical thing, it was an attitude thing. I thought in the second half we had the right attitude and were rightly rewarded with a goal."
Central did get an equalizer in the 85
th minute on a header by freshman midfielder
Jake Dzarnowski (Wheaton, Ill., North HS).
"We think we have a pretty good player in Jake," Laidlaw said. "We're happy that he got his first collegiate goal today. It was a good header at an important time of the game. We are really happy with him so far."
Just under seven minutes into overtime, Mariano Mateo scored the winner.
"We got undone by a counter attack that shouldn't have happened," Laidlaw said. "We need to learn from that and we will."
Central will travel to Mount Vernon for a 5 p.m. match against Cornell College on Wednesday.
