PELLA — A full 110 minutes was not enough time for a winner to emerge in Tuesday's women's soccer match between Central College and Knox College (Ill) as the two sides tied 1-1.
With the draw, the Dutch are now 3-1-1. The Prairie Fire moved to 2-2-1.
"They've been a tournament team for a reason the last two seasons," coach
Mike Kobylinski said. "I thought we competed very well with them. It could have gone either way, so I think a 1-1 draw is fair."
Trailing 1-0 at the half, Central made some adjustments to spark the offense. It took seven minutes for
Olivia Denham (senior, midfielder, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) to put up a shot from the right side that hit off the keeper and rolled in the goal for the equalizer.
"We came out in a little bit of a different shape," Kobylinski said. "I think that put them on the back heel for 15-20 minutes. Credit it to Coach Roxworthy and Goodman for helping me out with those adjustments."
"Olivia was also marking one of their best players. There's a reason she played 87 minutes prior to the overtime period, she's a work horse."
Annie Peterson of the Prairie Fire had a point-blank effort turned away by center back
Bridget Poster (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS) in the seventh minute of the first overtime.
"Bridget played like a grown woman today," Kobylinski said."
Poster and midfielder
Elise Askelsen (junior, Indianola) were the only two field players to go the full 110 minutes.
"Elise is fit as a fiddle," Kobylinski said. "It won't show up in the stats, but I thought she played a phenomenal game. She won balls, she distributed, she communicated, I thought she did an outstanding job."
Another big home contest awaits Central on Sunday afternoon when Illinois Wesleyan University comes to Pella for a 2 p.m. match.
"This 1-1 draw will be big for us at the end of the season," Kobylinski said. "I was happy with how we played as a unit for a full 110 minutes. We'll take that momentum into Sunday."
