PELLA — Thursday's doubleheader between the Central College baseball team and Luther College turned out to be a pitcher's duel that went against the Dutch, falling 4-3 in 10 innings in game one and dropping the nightcap 4-1.
Central's (10-12 overall, 1-7 Iowa Conference play) pitchers combined to throw 17 innings, allowing eight runs and striking out 17 Luther hitters. Senior ace Dylan Diveney (Marshalltown) led the way in the opener, throwing six innings, surrendering three runs and striking out nine.
"Our message after the game was that our pitching threw well enough for us to win today," said coach Matt Schirm. "Dylan was his normal self today. He located all of his pitches and really pounded the zone."
Freshman second baseman Anthony Fumagalli (Plainfield, Ill., North HS) had a great ninth inning in the opening game, throwing out a base runner to end the top half of the inning and later driving in the game-tying run in the bottom half.
"I was really happy for Anthony today," said Schirm. "He is one of our hardest workers and it was awesome to see him come through offensively and defensively as well."
Fumagalli finished the day with a pair of hits.
Getting the spot start at first base in the nightcap, senior Ryan Garrett (Aledo, Ill., Mercer County HS) was thrilled with his performance.
"Ryan did a nice job for us tonight," said Schirm. "He hit the ball hard each time he was up and even made a few nice scoops at first base."
Garrett finished with two hits in three at-bats.
Sophomore Joe Rebik (Marshalltown) was responsible for the lone run in game two with a home run to left field, his second round-tripper in three games.
The Dutch finish non-conference play Saturday with a doubleheader against the University of Chicago in Chicago, Ill. with first pitch at noon.
