INDEPENDENCE — After holding a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Central College baseball team was outscored 8-1 over the final three innings, falling 10-4 to Luther College.
Central (10-15, 1-8 Iowa Conference play) tallied its first run in the fifth inning with a home run to right field from sophomore right fielder Tanner Wood (Pella). The Dutch added two more runs in the sixth inning with an RBI single to left field from senior designated hitter Kyle Crampton (Omaha, Neb., Millard South HS). Wood drove in the other run with a double to center field to score sophomore left fielder Joe Rebik (Marshalltown). Rebik finished the game 3-for-4 with a double.
Sophomore right-hander Zach Edwards (Des Moines, Lincoln HS) threw 5.2 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs, walking three and striking out seven Norse hitters. Edwards received the loss which takes his record to 2-2 on the season.
Luther (17-7, 7-5 Iowa Conference play) scored three runs in the sixth, seventh and added two more in the eighth.
Junior second baseman Chris Riddle (Omaha, Neb., Mount Michael HS) launched a home run in the ninth inning to left center to pull the Dutch to 10-4 but the rally ended there.
Central continues Iowa Conference play Friday with a trip to Cedar Rapids for a three-game series against Coe College. Game one is Friday at 3 p.m. with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
