Doubles drives Dutch women to tennis win

AURORA, ILLINOIS — Coming up one point shy of sweeping all three doubles matches in shutout fashion, the Central College women's tennis team rolled past Aurora University 9-0 Thursday.

Central (10-2) swept Aurora (2-14) in the team's second match of the spring season, propelled by a strong start in the doubles. The Dutch beat Grand View University 5-4 on March 2.

"We looked a lot better than we did against Grand View," coach Ryun Ferrell said. "We were able to get that first match out of the way and we looked a lot more relaxed. We seemed to be more comfortable in what we were doing and what we wanted to accomplish.

"We talked about playing clean, making our returns and playing smart. We wanted to make sure we give them no reason to be excited and that's exactly what we did."

Ashley Maley (senior, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and Madison Krumm (junior, Kellogg, Grinnell HS) picked up one of the shutouts, blanking the Spartans' No. 3 doubles team 8-0

"They're a nice team with good chemistry," Ferrell said. "They know what to expect from each other as partners. They picked up where they left off in the fall and took care of business."

Karleigh Schilling (freshman, Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS)
and Kari Grindberg (senior, Fort Dodge) also won 8-0 at No. 1 doubles while freshmen Laurynn Mize (Sycamore, Ill.) and Sarah Behrens (Red Oak) came out on top 8-1 at No. 2.

Cassidy Bos (junior, Geneseo, Ill.) picked up her second consecutive singles victory, toppling Aurora's No. 5 player 6-0, 6-3.

"She looked smarter than did she last time and she played better," Ferrell said.

Grindberg was victorious 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Schilling won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Maley outlasted her opponent for a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 while Jenna Stewart (junior, Burlington, Notre Dame HS) triumphed 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 4 spot. Kaysey Bos (freshman, Geneseo, Ill.) won by default at No. 6.

The Dutch will welcome Northwestern College for a match next Saturday, March 24 at 9 a.m.
