C.J. Pestano (125 pounds, senior, Torrance, Calif.) became the 13th wrestler from Central College to join the 100-victory club and jumpstarted the Dutch to a 21-16 victory over Luther College Thursday night.
While picking up his 23
rd straight win of the season, Pestano was able to secure his 100
th career victory. He did it in a very workmanlike fashion, taking the major decision 10-2.
"I don't think we can ever appreciate how consistent C.J. has been," "It's pretty rarify air at Central to be that consistent over four years. He got us started off and gave us some momentum at that first weight."
Second on the team in wins this season with 21,
Jeremy Vester (junior, Oak Harbor, Wash.) had a takedown in each period to win 7-3 at 165 pounds.
Nathan Fritz (junior, Sigourney) followed up with a thrilling 10-8 victory at 174 pounds to extend Central's lead to 15-9.
"Those were the two momentum swinging matches for us," Van Kley said. "Both matches could have gone either way and they swung the match in our favor."
141-pounder
Daniel Radcliffe (junior, Lockport, Ill., Lockport Township HS) needed just 4 minutes, 37 seconds to pile up 20 points to win by a 20-2 technical fall.
Collin Groleau (sophomore, Peru, Ill., LaSalle-Peru Township HS) came out on top 8-2 at 157 pounds.
Wayne Sommerlot (184 pounds, freshman, Pocahontas Area HS) gave Central its final win of the night at 184 pounds with a 5-3 decision.
One final Iowa Conference dual remains on the schedule as the Dutch will host Simpson College next Thursday night at 7 p.m. from inside P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. Pending the results of other matches, Central could finish in a three-way tie for fourth place with Luther and the University of Dubuque.
"Anytime we face Simpson, we know we are going to get their best effort," Van Kley said. "Our guys are going to be ready to go also.
