Central women ousted in first round of league soccer tournament

DUBUQUE — The Central College women's soccer team struck first, but the University of Dubuque rattled off three straight goals to eliminate the Dutch from the American Rivers Conference tournament 3-1 Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch end their season with a record of 10-7-1 overall.

"They were a quality side," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "They're a well-coached team without many weaknesses. I think they could win the tournament."

Netting her 10th goal of the season, Olivia Denham (senior, midfielder, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) put her head on a cross from Erin Manion (junior, forward, Delafield, Wis., Kettle Moraine HS) in the 33rd minute to give Central a 1-0 lead.

"It was nice to see go out as a senior with a goal," Kobylinski said. "Olivia was in the right place at the right time."

The defensive backline of Bridget Poster (freshman, Davenport, Assumption HS), Sydney Canney (freshman, Adel, ADM HS), Caitlyn Champ (senior, Kearney, Mo.) and Lauren Goeke (senior, St. Louis, Mo., Parkway South HS) was recognized for Kobylinski for their efforts.

"I thought they all played great," he said.

Midfielder Baylee Kivett (junior, Grinnell) was also cited by Kobylinski.

"Baylee played very well," he said. "I'm very excited to see what type of leader she can turn into in the future."

Seniors Denham, Champ, Goeke, Hailey Budke (defender, Leavenworth, Kan., Lansing HS), Olivia Stoops (midfielder, Morton, Ill.), Lauryn Kramer (defender, Cedar Falls), Lauren Vahlkamp (midfielder, Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame) and Hannah Reussner (forward, Lawrence, Kan., Free State HS) played their final game in a Central uniform.

"They've meant a lot to our program," Kobylinski said. "It's never easy to send them off. I'm really happy with how they grew as women over four years."
