WAVERLY — An injury-riddled Central College women's basketball team fell to D3Hoops.com No. 2 Wartburg College 86-44 Wednesday night.
Without its starting point guard,
Jessica Helton (Nevada) and one of its starting forwards,
Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa HS), Central fell behind 38-21 at the half.
The loss sends the Dutch to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the Iowa Conference while Wartburg improves to 12-0 and 3-0 in conference play.
"It was a tough game tonight," said coach
Joe Steinkamp. "They are a tough team to play without two starters. Wartburg is a really good team and I thought they shot very well tonight which makes them even harder to guard. I was pleased with how hard we played even after getting down early."
Senior guard
Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) had 16 points, including three 3-pointers and two assists.
"Dine continues to shoot it well from three," said Steinkamp. "She also had some nice drives to the basket."
Filling in for fellow senior Kriegel,
Tina Lane (Williamsburg) had six points and seven rebounds.
"I liked how
Tina Lane competed on the glass tonight," said Steinkamp.
The Knights shot 48.6 percent from the floor while holding the Dutch to 23.6 and won the rebound battle 48-36.
Central continues conference play Saturday with a women's-men's doubleheader at Storm Lake against Buena Vista University with the women beginning at 2 p.m. The Beavers won both contests last season.
