Central drops top-10 wrestling battle

PELLA — The fifth-ranked Loras College Duhawks upended the ninth-ranked Central College Dutch in Iowa Conference wrestling action Thursday night inside P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.

The loss drops Central to 1-2 in conference matches and 2-2 overall. Loras is 2-0 in league action and 11-0 overall.

Riding out his opponent for the duration of the third period, 174-pounder Nathan Fritz (sophomore, Sigourney) sealed a 6-1 victory over Sam Schuler.

"Fritz is a gamer," coach Eric Van Kley said. "He loves to compete and you know you are always going to get his best effort. I'm extremely proud of his effort tonight"

At 141 pounds, sophomore Daniel Radcliffe (Lockport, Ill., Lockport Township HS) rallied from an early deficit to garner a 9-7 decision in the first overtime period.

"I think he found a gear that he wasn't even sure he had," Van Kley said. "He dug deep and showed a lot of heart and determination."

Collin Groleau (sophomore, Peru, Ill., LaSalle-Peru Township HS) controlled the match for the entire seven minutes en route to a 5-1 decision.

"He's made a big jump from last year," Van Kley said. "From getting a little bit of time as freshman to becoming the guy at 157 this year, he's really stepped up. He's shown a lot of poise and consistency."

Central got its usual start from No. 2 C.J. Pestano (senior, Torrance, Calif.) at 125 pounds, who picked up a three-point decision 6-2.

Saturday's Iowa Conference duals in Storm Lake presents a chance for the Dutch to pick up a trio of dual victories. In addition to the host school Buena Vista University, Central will also face Wartburg College and the University of Dubuque.

"It's Iowa Conference wrestling at its finest," Van Kley said. "We've got to reload and continue to have a good work of training and be ready to good on Saturday."
