INDIANOLA — An equalizer with seconds remaining in regulation by the Central College men's soccer team was outdone by an overtime penalty kick goal by Simpson College as Central fell 3-2.
It was the first loss of the season for Central (6-1-0, 0-1-0 conference) as Simpson stayed unblemished at 8-0-0, 1-0-0 conference.
As time was winding down and the Dutch were trailing 2-1,
Miguel Pina (senior, Chicago, Ill., Taft HS) buried the game-tying goal at the 89:51 mark to force overtime. The goal came off an assist from goalkeeper
Salvador Salado-Herrera (freshman, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Park Center HS) on a freekick.
A penalty kick goal three minutes into the ensuing overtime by Garrett Pochop was the different in the Storm's victory.
Bryce Leonard's (senior, Williamsville, Ill.) goal at 63:21 also was an equalizer before the Storm retook the lead at 64:45.
Seth Signs (senior, Grinnell) was credited with an assist.
Salado-Herrera recorded a career-high seven saves as the Storm fired off 18 shots. Midfielder
Salvador Villanueva (senior, Morris, Ill.) led the Dutch with three shot attempts, two of which were on goal.
A big week is on the horizon for the Dutch. A non-conference tilt on the road at North Central College is set for Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Naperville, Illinois. Central will then welcome Wartburg College and the 5-1-1 Knights come to town for a 3:30 p.m. match.
