DES MOINES — Despite strong winds on the second day of the Jim Duncan Invitational, the sprinters of the Central College men's track and field team raced to some personal best times Saturday.
In the 400-meter dash,
Blake Morgan (junior, Story City, Roland-Story HS) eclipsed the 50-second barrier, placing seventh in 49.92. He's just the seventh runner in the Iowa Conference to do so this season.
P.J. Carey (junior, Ankeny) placed 11th in 50.45.
"Blake's run was very good and P.J. was pretty close behind," associate head coach
Jim Fuller said. "I thought they both ran real well"
Carey led off and Morgan anchored the sixth place 4x400-meter relay team to a time of 3:24.21. They were joined by
Caleb Jennings (sophomore, Spirit Lake) and
Connor Lewin (freshman, Stillman Valley HS).
"We're getting better with those long sprinters," Fuller said. "You kind of expect their training to start showing some effect at this point in the season."
Jennings, Morgan and Lewin were also a part of the fifth place 4x100-meter relay squad (43.57).
Justin Wimbish (junior, Glendale, Ariz., Apollo HS) joined the foursome in the leadoff role as Lewin anchored.
"(Connor) got the baton in third and moved us up to win the heat," Fuller said. "That's the first time he's run with our top 4x100 team. He's got some talent and is coming along nicely."
Cory Suedmeier (freshman, Ankeny, Centennial HS) was also 11th in the 100-meter dash in 11.56 seconds.
The final home competition for the Dutch track squad is next weekend's Central Open. Field events will begin at 10 a.m. On the track, the 10,000-meter run begins at 11 a.m. with the rest of the events slated to start at 1 p.m.
