IOWA CITY—Junior long jumper
Justin Wimbish (Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS) improved his national standing with a career-best effort at the University of Iowa Open Saturday.
No team scores were kept at the competition. The meet was held at Iowa's newly-renovated facility, featuring the track used at the 2016 Indoor World Championships.
Wimbish sailed past the competition and his previous best when he reached 23 feet, 0.5 inches, moving him into the top-25 in Division III.
"It was a great opportunity for them to run on the banked track," Dunham said. "They saw some very good competition."
Two out of three Central runners entered in the 800-meter run set season bests, led by
Taylor Donner's (junior, Dubuque) time of 1:58.07 that placed him fifth.
Kyle Pape (sophomore, Dubuque/Wahlert Catholic HS) also set a career best at 1:58.83 to take seventh.
Jon Specht (junior, Dubuque/Hempstead HS) was right behind in eighth place and clocked in at 1:59.64.
Mark Fairley (junior, Dubuque) obliterated his best 3,000 meter effort with a second-place finish in 8:23.67. When adjusted for running on the banked track, he's now 24th nationally in the event.
Also running in just the 3,000 meters,
Tanner Rathje (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar HS) took sixth with a time of 9:21.62.
"The whole idea was to try and get some good times for the conference championships," Dunham said. "We want to position ourselves for the fast heats."
Central heads to the University of Dubuque next weekend for the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships. The two-day event kicks off Friday night and will continue into Saturday. The Dutch are going for their third crown in as many years.
