Dutch women’s basketball team falters down the stretch

LINCOLN, NEB. — After holding a 27-24 halftime lead, the Central College women's basketball team faltered down the stretch, losing 67-58 at Iowa Conference foe Nebraska Wesleyan Wednesday night.

Junior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS), the Central College career 3-point leader, broke the season record after draining her second trifecta of the game. Mariah Swartzentruber previously held the record with 64 3-pointers in 2014-15. Dine has 67 3's this season.

"I'm proud of Emily Dine for breaking a record tonight," said coach Chelsea Petersen. "It's a testament to the work she has put in over her time in the program."

Dine led Central (9-11 overall, 2-9 conference) with 12 points off 4-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc. Freshman forward Kendall Brown (Moravia) had 12 points and four rebounds, sophomore guard Kaitlyn Johnson (Stockport, Van Buren HS) added nine points, junior forward Jackie Kriegel (Marengo, Iowa Valley HS) had eight points and nine rebounds and sophomore forward Claire Marburger (Perry) returned to the court, after being out for two games, with six points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Central won the battle on the boards 41-40 but were outshot by the Prairie Wolves outshot 40.3 percent to 35.0. The Dutch were hurt by 20 turnovers.

"Defensively, we matched up well and our work on the boards was much improved," said Petersen. "We had a few defensive breakdowns and, unfortunately, Nebraska Wesleyan was able to capitalize on those breakdowns. We struggled to find consistent scoring and missed a lot of opportunities to convert."

The Dutch return to P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium for a league contest with No. 11-ranked Wartburg College Saturday in a women's-men's doubleheader at 2 p.m. Wartburg enters the matchup coming off an 88-83 road win over Loras College Wednesday. Saturday's game will be Pink Night for the basketball programs. T-shirts will be available for purchase in the Kuyper Gym lobby for $10. The proceeds will be donated to an organization chosen by the Dutch basketball programs.
