Dutch deliver in men's basketball D3Hoops Classic Finale

LAS VEGAS NEV. — After a back-and-forth 74-69 upset victory over No. 6 Ramapo College (N.J.) Friday, the Central College men's basketball team left little doubt in its 71-48 triumph over Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) Saturday at the D3Hoops Classic in Las Vegas, Nev.

Central unleashed a balanced-scoring attack with three players reaching double figures and 11 of the 15 players scored.

"It was really nice to get everyone in tonight to play and we had a lot of guys knock down shots," said coach Craig Douma.

Leading the way for the Dutch was sophomore forward Luke Finley (St. Louis, Mo., Lafayette HS) with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, his first career statistical double-double.

"Luke has a nice inside-outside game to him and he had both working tonight," said Douma. "His effort tonight was great to see."

Joining Finley in double digits was senior forward Kyle Smith (Grand River, New Hampton HS) with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Jamel McKnight (Austin, Texas, Hendrickson HS) had 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.

"Kyle had a great game tonight and I was most impressed with his defense," said Douma. "He held their leading scorer to zero points. Kyle also knocked down some shots early in the game."

The Dutch dominated the rebounding battle 50-39 and outshot Pacific Lutheran 42.9 percent to 30.3.

"We knew coming into the game we wanted to control the glass and we did," said Douma. "We wanted to have 55 percent of the rebounds and we achieved our goal."

Central returns to Iowa Conference play Wednesday at Waverly with a matchup against No. 13 Wartburg College at 8 p.m. Wartburg enters the contest coming off a 68-64 loss to Augsburg College (Minn.) at the D3Hoops Classic.

"Wartburg is a really good team, they're well coached and we're going to have to be ready to go Wednesday night," said Douma.
