Captain ignites Central men in conference soccer win

CEDAR RAPIDS — Senior captain and midfielder Andrew McMillan (Dunlap, Ill.) struck first as Central put on an offensive showcase in a 5-0 win over Coe College Wednesday night.

Central picked up its first league win (8-2-0, 1-2-0 IIAC) while Coe fell to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in league matches.

McMillan knocked in his first goal of the season at the nine-minute mark by hitting from straight on from 20 yards out.

"I thought he had one of his best games of the year," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "It's great to see our captain lead from the front and score a nice goal."

Midfielder Salvador Villanueva (senior, Morris, Ill.), also a captain, added a goal of his own in the second half to push the lead to 3-0. Villaneuva was assisted by Daniel Alanis (junior, Phoenix, Ariz., Apollo HS).

"It starts and ends with (Villanueva and McMillan) a lot of times," Laidlaw said. "They were both good tonight."

Forward Aroni Niyikiza (junior, Cedar Rapids, Washington HS) scored on a penalty kick in the 30th minute. While striker Miguel Pina (junior, Chicago, Ill., Taft HS) and midfielder Ben Turnley (sophomore, Manhattan, Kan.) added second-half tallies to add to the margin of victory.

"Ben really changed the dynamic for us when he subbed in during the first half," Laidlaw said. "He had great energy all night and he got rewarded in the second half with his first goal."

The Dutch will step away from conference matches for one final non-league contest this Saturday as they host the University of Wisconsin-Platteville at 4 p.m. from the soccer field at A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex.

"Our schedule has been getting more and more challenging," Laidlaw said. "This will be the third regionally-ranked team we've played in four games. We feel we've been competing very well and it provides us with another opportunity to face a great team."
