PLATTEVILLE, WIS.—The Central College men's track and field squad team had success across the board at the Pioneer Open on Saturday.
No team scores were kept at the competition.
Despite only winning one, the Dutch had top-three finishes in six different events, including five individual performances.
The top individual performance belonged to
Justin Wmbish (junior, Glendale, Ariz./Apollo HS), who uncorked a long jump of 22 feet, 3.75 inches to place second.
"Justin had a great meet," coach
Joe Dunham said. "This is the first meet of the season and for him to be there already is fantastic. He looked really good sprinting as well."
Wimbish led off the champion 4x200-meter relay team that clocked in at 1 minute, 33.40 seconds. He was joined by
Blake Morgan (junior, Story City/Roland-Story HS), P.J. Carey (junior, Ankeny) and
Caleb Jennings (sophomore, Spirit Lake).
Standing out amongst a plethora of good efforts in the middle distance and distance events,
Mark Fairley (junior, Dubuque) placed second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:39.17.
Kyle Pape (sophomore, Dubuque/Wahlert Catholic HS) also unleashed a career-best time in the mile, clocking in at 4:31.68.
"I was pleased with our middle distance and distance runners," Dunham said. "Kyle had a pretty big PR. He's running faster than he ever has. He's doing all of this during our most intense training. We're excited to see what he can do as we progress."
In the shot put, sophomore
Nathan Fitzgerald (Elkader, Central Elkader HS) took third with a toss of 47-11.25.
Central will be in Waverly for the Wartburg Select on February 3 and 4.
