Central men’s basketball team continues winning ways

PELLA — Senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston) had 28 points and 15 rebounds in a Central College men's basketball team 80-61 victory over Coe College Saturday afternoon.

Central (11-8 overall, 5-5 Iowa Conference) started the game fast, racing out to a 28-11 lead in the first half and the Kohawks never cut the deficit to single digits.

"Colby got it going tonight," said coach Craig Douma. "He was able to get inside and took his time with his move and finished well."

Junior forward Kyle Smith (Ionia New Hampton HS) had 16 points and three assists, senior guard Pete Walker (Red Oak) added nine points and six rebounds, senior forward Austin Glawe (Aurelia, Sioux Central HS) had nine points and six rebounds and senior forward Ryan Kunkel (Solon) added nine points, including a monster alley-oop dunk and six rebounds.

"We did a good job of finding guys on cuts to the basket," said Douma. "Ryan and Austin did a great job getting to the basket. We got some great energy off the bench tonight and it allowed for us to get our starters a break."

Central outshot Coe 46.9 percent shooting from the floor to 30.9 percent shooting from the floor and outrebounded the Kohawks 47-42.

"We rebounded better tonight," said Douma.

The Dutch continue Iowa Conference play Wednesday at Nebraska Wesleyan in a women's-men's doubleheader with the men beginning at 8 p.m. The Prairie Wolves defeated Central 93-86 at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium this past Monday.

"Our goal right now is to make the league tournament," said Douma. "We have a lot of home games the rest of the way and we love playing in front of this home crowd on Saturdays. We feel like we kind of gave away that game on Monday night and we think we can take care of business there."
