PELLA — The rout started early in a 42-0 Central College wrestling team victory over William Penn Thursday night at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium.
Central (8-2) raced out to a 15-0 lead after technical falls from junior
C.J. Pestano (Torrance, Calif), sophomore
Cam Timok (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage HS) and freshman
Daniel Radcliffe (Lockport, Ill., Lockport Township HS).
"Very proud of the way our guys wrestled tonight," said coach
Eric Van Kley. "I told the guys before the match to feed off the energy in the gym and wrestle aggressive."
The Dutch kept the momentum rolling with
Jahleel Vester (junior, Oak Harbor, Wash.) and
Jeremy Vester (sophomore, Oak Harbor, Wash.) winning by major decision and a 48-second pin respectively.
"The Vester brothers wrestled fantastic tonight," said Van Kley. "Their mother was in attendance tonight from Washington and it was special to see them perform the way they did."
With a national television feature from NBC Nightly News from Harry Smith '73, senior
Jaime Miranda (Aberdeen, Wash.) capped off the Dutch victory with a 5-2 decision.
"I'm tremendously proud of the way Jaime handled the spotlight today," said Van Kley.
In front of a standing-room-only crowd, the Central wrestlers took notice, according to Van Kley.
"Tonight's atmosphere was amazing," he said. "Every time we have a home wrestling match it turns into an event and to see all of Central College out here tonight was special. The wrestlers fed off that energy."
Central heads back to the mat Saturday at the Loras College Dukhawk Open. Matches begin at 9 a.m. The Dutch return to Iowa Conference action Thursday hosting Luther College at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium with matches beginning at 6 p.m. Following the Dutch-Norse matchup is a high school match between Pella High School and Oskaloosa High School at 8 p.m.
