Comeback! Central rallies for dramatic volleyball win

PELLA--Roaring back from a 2-0 deficit, the Central College volleyball team delighted a homecoming crowd with a 24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-12 Iowa Conference victory over Loras College Friday night.

According to coach Kent Clayberg, the turning point was aggressive offense from outside hitter Kylie Gerstein (junior, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS), who had 15 kills.

"Dropping the first set was a little disappointing, but we were able to turn it around," he said. "Kylie was able to make aggressive swings from the back row and she was a catalyst for us tonight."

For the first time this season, the Dutch had five athletes with double-digit kills. Middle hitter Jenna Dille (junior, Carlisle) and outside hitter Mollie Mason (junior, Iowa City, West HS)had 11 apiece while outside hitterMelissa Miller (sophomore, Williamsburg) and middle hitter Emly McDonald (junior, Orange City, MOC-Floyd Valley HS) both had 10.

Setter Chapel Carter (sophomore, Colorado Springs, Coronado HS) established a career-high in assists totaling 40. Libero Nicole Ewoldt (senior, Hull, Boyden-Hull HS) set a career-high with 47 digs in the five-set match.

Now 8-8 overall, the Dutch are 2-1 in league play and have already eclipsed last year's conference win total. Central returns to Kuyper Gym Saturday at noon, to square off against the University of Dubuque. The Spartans (10-8 overall, 1-2 conference) fell at Simpson College Friday in five sets.
