Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dutch unable to hang on to lead, suffer women’s soccer defeat

ALMA, MICH. — A two-goal lead was not enough for the Central College women's soccer team, as Alma College stormed back to take a 3-2 overtime victory Saturday.

Clinging to a 2-1 lead with under a minute to play, the Dutch (0-1) lost possession of the ball in its defensive half of the field. Alma's (2-0) all-region player Macayla Greiner got a hold of the ball and made her move, scoring at 89:44 to send the game to overtime.

Just 2:44 into the overtime period Greiner struck again, netting the game-winning goal.

"We need to close out games better," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "We need to be smarter in critical moments in order to kill games."

In a wild sequence in the 17th minute, Central found the back of the net twice in a 25-second span to sprint out to a 2-0 lead. Kalee Findlay's (junior, Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) goal off an assist from Kallie Holte (junior, Kirksville, Mo.) was quickly followed by an Olivia Denham (sophomore, Bondurant, Bondurant-Farrar HS) goal assisted by Anissa Stanitzek (senior, Grand Rapids, Mich., Coopersville HS).

"Coach Gannon worked on some things with the team this on attacking and that showed," Kobylinski said. "I don't know if we've ever scored goals that close together, especially against a quality opponent like Alma."

Goalkeeper Sydney Lunardi (senior, Bettendorf, Davenport Assumption HS) recorded 10 saves, including a critical penalty shot.

"She stood on her head today and made some brilliant saves," Kobylinski said.

The Dutch will try to break even on their two-game Michigan trip tomorrow, playing at Albion College at 5:30 p.m.

"It was the first game of the season and we learned some hard lessons today," Kobylinski said.  "We've got a resilient group and we'll be ready for Albion tomorrow."
