Central men’s soccer squad gets back on track

MONMOUTH, ILL. — With a 1-0 road victory at Monmouth College (Ill.), the Central College men's soccer team picked up its sixth win of the season Tuesday.

In a game that featured a grand total of nine combined shots between the two teams, both the Dutch (6-3-0) and the Scots (2-6-1) put on a defensive clinic.

"I was really pleased with the way we defended today," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "I don't think we gave the opposition much. I was impressed with Monmouth's defensive form as well."

The Dutch (6-3-0) lit up the scoreboard in the 29th minute of the game, the lone score of the match. Sophomore Miguel Pina (Chicago, Ill., Taft HS) was joined by Aroni Niyikiza (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Washington HS) and Ben Turnley (freshman, Manhattan, Kan.)to find the back of the net.

"The breakthrough was a nice combination between the three of them," Laidlaw said. "Aroni and Ben were both critical to the build-up and Miguel got the final touch."

Pina leads the team with six goals this season and Niyakiza is tied for the team lead with two assists.

Playing all 90 minutes in goal, senior Josh Carpenter (Chelsea, Ala.) didn't have to make any saves but was able to pick up his second shutout of the season.

"Josh came out and claimed a number of balls quite confidently," Laidlaw said. "He was generally solid today."

Freshman Taylor Petkovich (Littleton, Colo. Heritage HS) and junior Calvin Bill (Hartsburg, Mo., Southern Boone County HS) were mentioned by Laidlaw for their efforts.

"Taylor gave us some nice contributions today," he said. "Calvin did a great job of winning balls in the air all day."

Central opens Iowa Conference play with a road match against Coe College on Friday night in Cedar Rapids starting at 7:30 p.m.
