INDIANOLA —A faster start in the match translated to an encouraging start in Iowa Conference play as the Central College volleyball team scored a big road victory over Simpson College Tuesday, 28-26, 18-25, 25-21, 25-20.
Getting out of the blocks slowly has plagued the Dutch thus far this season, but Tuesday night was a different story, although not immediately
"We got off to another slow start but to the players' credit they kept fighting and were able to battle back to win set one," said Coach Kent Clayberg.
A balanced attack for the Dutch (3-6 overall, 1-0 conference) was key in the victory. Outside hitter Kylie Gerstein (junior, Iowa Falls, Iowa Falls-Alden HS) led Central with 14 kills. Outside hitter Mollie Mason (junior, Iowa City, West HS) added 11 kills on 18 attacks, hitting .556 for the match. The offense from the outside allowed middle hitterJenna Dille (junior, Carlisle) to have an impact with nine kills on 15 attacks with no errors.
"Our offense was so balanced tonight, it wasn't just one or two players that were carrying the load," said Clayberg. "When we are able to be balanced on offense we are a dangerous team."
Setters Chapel Carter (sophomore, Colorado Springs (Colo.), Coronado HS) and Madison Egger (Lincoln, Neb., Southwest HS) combined for 49 assists--27 and 22 respectively.
The Dutch travel to Monmouth College (Ill.) Thursday, where looks Central to add to its current six-match win streak over the Scots.
