Fourth straight clean sheet for Central women’s soccer team

PELLA — Holding their opponents off the scoreboard for the fourth consecutive match, the Central College women's soccer team ousted Mount Mercy by a 2-0 margin Tuesday.

Nearly 450 minutes of game action have passed since the last time the Dutch (4-1-1) have allowed an opponent to score a goal. Over that time frame, Central has shut out four opponents in a row, tying a program record.

Coach Mike Kobylinski said cited the effort of his defenders, but specifically mentioned the four backline starters Kelsey Roxworthy (senior, St. Charles, Ill., East HS)Kayla Dowell (junior, Cedar Falls)Jackie Sunderman (junior, Pella) and Rachel Verhun (junior, Ann Arbor, Mich., Pioneer HS).

"Sometimes, I don't think they get the credit they deserve," Kobylinski said. "They've been outstanding for us so far this year.

"Mount Mercy is a good team. For us to hold them scoreless says a lot about our team defense."

Senior goalkeeper Sydney Lunardi (Bettendorf, Davenport Assumption HS) played the full 90 minutes and picked up the win.

"She was quality tonight," Kobylinski said.

Midfielder Kallie Holte (junior, Kirksville, Mo.) scored goals No. 5 and 6 on the year, both coming in the first half, including off a free kick. Assisting on the first goal was forward Kayla Sunvold (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS).

"Both of Kallie's goals were top-notch," Kobylinski said. "When Kallie and Kayla are clicking, they are pretty tough to stop."

Central will look to win five straight when it hosts Westminster College (Mo.) on Friday.

"Westminster will be physical," Kobylinski said. "We've got to be ready for the physicality. Our team is tough though, I'll take this group anywhere."

Dutch receive votes in D3soccer.com poll—In the second D3soccer.com poll of the season, Central received three votes. Central also received votes in the poll in 2015. Iowa Conference rival Loras was ranked No. 24 while Wartburg was the first team outside of the rankings.
