Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Shooting woes doom Dutch in men’s basketball contest

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. — Basketball is an easy game, when the ball goes through the hoop.

But it wasn't so easy for the cold-shooting Central College men's basketball team Thursday night. Traveling to Wisconsin Dells, Wis. for the JustAGame Classic, the Dutch shot just 34 percent from the field and 20.6 percent from 3-point range in falling to Wis-Stout 64-56.

"We're not going to win games when we can't make shots," said coach Craig Douma. "We didn't shoot the ball well and we didn't rebound well."

Wis-Stout (7-2) won the rebound battle 44-34,  getting 12 offensive rebounds. Central (7-3), which has dropped its last two games in a beefed-up non-conference schedule, missed 16 of 18 3-point tries in the second half.

Senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston) led the Dutch with 20 points and seven rebounds. Taylor finished 3-for-11 from 3-point range, well below his 46.7-percent season average. Senior guard Pete Walker (Red Oak) had 13 points and three assists, junior forward Kyle Smith (Ionia, New Hampton HS) had nine points and junior guard Trashawn Boyd (Normal, Ill., University HS) had eight points, all of which came in the second half.

The Dutch found themselves in foul trouble throughout the game with Boyd and Walker fouling out of the contest.

"I thought we were able to play through the foul trouble but we just needed more guys to step up and score for us tonight," said Douma.

Central has a quick turnaround before tackling another high-profile opponent. The Dutch take on Wis.-Whitewater Friday at 3 p.m. in day two of the Classic. Wis.-Whitewater (9-0) has averaged 90.3 points per game this season. Following the clash with the Warhawks, the Dutch will resume Iowa Conference play next week. Central is 1-1 in league play thus far.
