SPRINGFIELD, ILL. — Two is good, but three is better.
The Central College women's basketball team defeated Robert Morris-Springfield 76-27 Sunday to capture its third win in the young season.
For the third time this season, sophomore forward Claire Marburger (Perry) led all scorers with 27 points, including 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
"Claire was able to make great reads today," said coach Chelsea Petersen.
Marburger connected multiple times with junior guard Emily Dine (Oldsmar, Fla., East Lake HS) according to Petersen.
"Claire combined with Emily Dine for a few inside-out opportunities," she said.
Preparing for the game, the coaching staff identified certain focal points for the team.
"Heading into the game we had several points to our game plan that we needed to execute and we did a great job of that today," said Petersen.
One focus point for the Dutch was their defense.
"Our defense was excellent today," said Petersen. "We did a really good job of shutting down their high-post game and also shut down their outside shooting. We were also able to create offense from our defense."
The Dutch resume play Tuesday in Mount Pleasant against Iowa Wesleyan (0-3).
Sunday's game provided a chance for the Dutch to prepare for their upcoming matchup according to Petersen.
"Robert Morris-Springfield played a zone against us today, which allowed us to work on our zone offense," said she said. "Tuesday we head to Iowa Wesleyan, who is predominately a zone-defensive team. We were able to work on our offensive execution. We will now prepare tomorrow for Iowa Wesleyan."
