DUBUQUE — A program-record winning streak was eradicated Saturday as the Central College women's soccer team was defeated by Loras College 2-0.
Despite holding the game to a 0-0 draw after the first half, the winning streak came to a close after 10 consecutive victories. The Dutch (10-2-1, 2-1-0 Iowa Conference) were stymied by the Duhawks (7-3-0, 3-0-0), a perennial power in the conference.
"I thought holding the game to 0-0 after a half is a testament to our team defense," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "Loras is a good team, especially at home."
Goalkeeper Sydney Lunardi (senior, Bettendorf, Davenport Assumption HS) kept the Duhawks at bay for the majority of the 90-minute affair, standing tall to make 13 saves. One of the two goals for the Duhawks was scored on a penalty kick, assessed after a handball in the box.
"I thought Sydney was phenomenal today," Kobylinski said. "She was one of the best players on the field."
Center back Kelsey Roxworthy (senior, St. Charles, Ill. East HS) played all 90 minutes and Kobylinski said her presence was imperative.
"I thought she played a great game today," he said. "Sydney and her really kept us in it."
Playing 61 minutes off the bench, Mikaela Erickson (freshman, Spring Lake, Mich., Western Michigan Christian HS) was able to put all three of her shot attempts on frame.
"She paced our offensive attack today," Kobylinski said. "She's dangerous on set pieces and her ability to strike the ball is very good."
It was the second match without forward Kallie Holte (junior, Kirksville, Mo.) who leads the team with eight goals and two assists.
The Dutch will look to start a new winning streak, when they welcome Nebraska Wesleyan University to Pella on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. match.
"I'm looking to see who is going to step up after a game like this," Kobylinski said. "The true character of a team is revealed after a loss. Hopefully, we can learn from this and give it a go Tuesday."
