DUBUQUE — A difficult night for the Central College men's soccer team on the defensive end resulted in a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Loras College Saturday night.
Coming off of an electrifying win Wednesday in which the Dutch (8-4, 2-1-0 Iowa Conference) shut out Simspon College, the Duhawks (6-4-0, 2-1-0) tallied a quintet of goals.
"I was disappointed in the way we defended the first few goals," coach Garry Laidlaw said. "I think they could have been prevented. Having said that, they were the better team today."
Behind 2-0 at halftime, Central was forced out of its rhythm and conceded a few more goals.
"I think the game got away from us a little bit in the second half," Laidlaw said.
Defender Owen Shawgo (senior, Nevada) was a bright spot for the Dutch.
"I thought Owen did what he was supposed to do," Laidlaw said. "They've got a lot of speed on the flanks and they send a ton of people forward. Owen did a really good job of dealing with that all day."
Laidlaw also pointed out the performance of freshman Phillip Garcia (Crest Hill, Ill., Plainfield HS) as noteworthy.
"He came off the bench and put in some quality work," he said.
Central returns home to face Nebraska Wesleyan University on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and will look to regroup against the Prairie Wolves.
"We've done a pretty good job of responding after every defeat this year," Laidlaw said. "I don't think we'll hang our heads, we'll get back to work on Monday. Every game in this conference is a battle. We know it's going to be a good team coming in and we'll be ready."
