MOUNT VERNON – Another dominant defensive performance moved the Central College women's soccer team's winning streak to nine games in a 3-0 non-conference victory over Cornell College Sunday.
Coming off an electrifying 1-0 victory over Coe College Friday, there was no letdown for the Dutch (9-1-1, 1-0-0) against the Rams (2-10-0). Depth was a key to the victory as seven players got their first starts of the season and a total of 24 players participated.
"It was great to get a lot of players in the game," coach Mike Kobylinski said. "Coach Gannon was superb helping to sub in players. Her input was critical in managing the game."
Senior goalkeeper Savana Robinson (Des Moines, Hoover HS) made her third start of the year and kept a clean sheet against the Rams while tallying a trio of saves.
"She's a pretty darn good goalkeeper," Kobylinski said. "She made some big saves. Coach Goodman has done a great job of training her over the last four years."
Kobylinski also cited junior defender Rachel Verhun (Ann Arbor, Mich., Pionner HS) as crucial to the success of the defense.
"I thought she was one of the best players on the pitch today," he said.
Central's first two scores both originated off corner kicks by midfielder Lauren Vahlkamp (sophomore, Quincy, Ill., Notre Dame HS). Friday night's hero Lauryn Kramer (sophomore, Cedar Falls) and Kayla Sunvold (senior, Runnells, Southeast Polk HS) took the assists from Vahlkamp for the first and second goal, respectively.
"Lauren laid a pair of beautiful balls into the box," Kobylinski said. "I was happy to Lauryn and Kayla get on the scoresheet."
