Central volleyball team gets back to winning ways

PELLA — On Senior Night, the Central College volleyball team was too much for Buena Vista University (12-12, 3-4 in conference), winning 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-23.

Central (10-9, 4-2 in conference) opened the match tentative, according to coach Kent Clayberg.

"We started off a little slow," he said. "We had seen Buena Vista on film and known that their outside hitters were powerful, and our women just needed time to adjust and get the timing down."

After the first-set defeat, the defense for Central started to restrict Buena Vista. Central allowed a hitting percentage of .086 in the first set but would reduce the match hitting percentage to .055, after allowing .000 and -.023 hitting percentages in sets two and three.

The Dutch offense was sparked by the middle hitters. Jenna Dille (junior, Carlisle) and Hannah Edgerton (freshman, Grundy Center) led the Dutch attack with 17 combined kills, 13 and 4 respectively.

"Our middle attackers were great tonight," said coach Clayberg. "When our middles are producing, it opens up our outside hitters for more single block attempts."

Setters Chapel Carter (sophomore, Colorado Springs, Colo., Coronado HS) and Regan Nelson (junior, Pella) set the table for the Dutch offense, assisting on 22 kills apiece.

Central will travel to Wis.-Platteville Friday for a two-day tournament. The Dutch open play on Friday at 4 p.m. against tournament host Wis.-Platteville, followed by Carthage College (Wis.) at 8 p.m.

Clayberg is looking to gain experience.

"We will get a lot of people in the matches this weekend as it is our last two-day event," he said. "We want to gain as much experience as we can heading into the final two conference matches, and the conference tournament."
