Why did you choose Central?
Pella is a community I've been visiting since childhood, and has always been a second home. After learning about the Central community and education department, I knew it was a place I could learn and grow from passionate educators. Playing a sport was also appealing to me, and I knew it would be a great way to make instant connections and balance out school work!
Favorite professor and why?
Central has so many professors, and support staff that go out of their way to make life better for others around them. I am a bit partial to the Education Department, and have loved classes with all of them! Tammy Strawser has led most of the classes in my emphasis, and has really impacted my time here. Dr. Stark is the sweetest mentor, and everyone should take a class with her if possible. Others such as John Roslien, Mark Thomas, Wendy Weber, and Tom Linton have really built interesting, engaging classes, and vibe well with students!
You’re majoring in Elementary Education because?
I have chosen to pursue a career in elementary education, with a specific focus on middle-level education and mathematics– driven by a passion for making a lasting impact on young minds during their critical developmental years. Basically, I want to be the math guy who turns those 'I can't do this!' moments into 'I got this!' victories. I'm here to make sure no student gets lost in the maze of algebra. Let's make middle school math an adventure, complete with laughter, a few well-timed math jokes, and maybe a card trick or two to keep things entertaining!
Besides athletics, what else are you involved in on campus?
I've been involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Central Teachers Academy, and was a Resident Advisor for a couple years. All have brought me great friends and been a good use of my time!
Who are your go-to musical artists?
Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, Chris Young
How has attending Central and playing a sport impacted your life?
It's been a really good spot and situation for me. I have been blessed at Central, and surrounded with great people. The transitional stage has set me up for success in the “real world” and I feel prepared for success post-graduation.
If you could be a cartoon character for a week, who would you choose?
I'd probably go with Bugs Bunny. I mean, who wouldn't want to be that clever, quick-witted rabbit? Plus, the ability to outsmart anyone with a smirk and a carrot seems like a pretty fantastic way to spend a week.
Which of your parents are you most similar to?
I'd be lying if I said only one or neither. My mom and I are always on the move, and don't really like to sit still. While my dad passed down his sense of humor and practical approach to problem-solving, and maybe a similar temperament. Honestly, probably the best of both worlds.
What’s your favorite piece of advice you’ve received?
“Just be you, that is always good enough.”
Favorite NBA team or player?
Any Iowa connections are automatically more likable. Jaxson Hayes is currently the only jersey I own!
Favorite TV Show?
“When you are backed against the wall, break the thing down.”
Suits… I have been told Harvey Specter and I share some personality traits
What’s it like to play for Coach Steinkamp?
It's awesome. Both he and Coach Riordan have really worked together and been great leaders for our basketball team. I appreciate their forward-thinking approach, and the opportunity they give us to succeed on and off the basketball court!
What’s your favorite part about being a member of Central’s men’s basketball team?
The team atmosphere. It's like having a second family – we're not just teammates; we're a tight-knit group working together towards a common goal.
What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
Teaching, coaching, and officiating in a great community with family and friends!
Favorite food from Central Market?
The dessert station is always a must stop. Big fan of the:
Gooey bars, lemon bars, tollhouse bars, caramel bars, almond bars.
It's also hard to pass on the pies, donuts, cookies, and crisps…
I then often walk out with an apple to feel better :)
