David Boschma
Olathe, Kan.
Class of 2021

Why did you chose Central?

My mom found out about Iowa private college week. She chose four random schools that had a men’s tennis program as well as football. She selected Central specifically because Boschma is a Dutch name. After visiting Central, I kept comparing all my other visits to Central. All the people I met from Central were so proud to be part of the Dutch family and it was very evident even after leaving campus.

Favorite professor and why?

Maggie Schlerman is my favorite professor. She is very blunt and straight to the point which is something I really appreciate. Her dry and witty sense of humor makes class enjoyable.

You’re majoring in Accounting because?

I am an accounting major because I knew that after college I wanted to pursue something in the business field. I thought accounting would be the most valuable business degree that I could receive from Central. I hope to use my background in accounting to the most valuable employee possible and be multifaceted in all my future endeavors.

Besides athletics, what else are you involved in on campus?

Other than tennis I am involved in Economics Accounting and Management club, or EAM Club.

Who are your go-to musical artists?

Growing up with an older brother I would listen to whatever he downloaded on the iTunes account. So, from an early age my go to music was mostly Hip-Hop/Rap. My top 5 Hip-Hop/Rap music artists would be Travis Scott, Schoolboy Q, Gunna, Pop Smoke, and Future. Living in Iowa for the past 4 years and my roommates/friends being big country music fans they’ve rubbed off on me. My top 5 country music artists would have to be Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, and Wheeler Walker Jr.

How has attending Central and playing a sport impacted your life?

Attending Central and playing a sport has definitely made a positive impact on my life. Being able to compete and further my athletic career is something that few people do. There is truly no other experience that will compare to putting on a Central jersey and competing for something more than just myself.

What went wrong for the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl?

In order to figure out what went wrong with the KC Chiefs in the Super Bowl, you have to figure out what went right for the Chiefs. I am still unable to find any positives that occurred during the Super Bowl for the Chiefs other than Patrick Mahomes proving he’s a super natural human. The Chiefs will be back and as long as we have Mahomes, Kelce, and Hill there are more rings in our future.

Rank the four tennis majors in order of your favorite to least favorite

In a very unbiased opinion and given the only one of the four tennis majors I’ve been to is Wimbledon… #1 would be Wimbledon without a doubt, there was just something special about the tournament that is hard to put in words. For #2 and being the proud American I am, I would have to say the U.S. Open. #3 would be the Australian open and then finally #4 is the French open, the sole reason for this would be that I don’t like playing on clay surfaces and I am not much of a Rafa fan.

Would you rather be a famous rock singer or the next Einstein/Tesla?

I would rather be a famous rock singer because I would love to travel, see the world, and meet lots of people. I think it would be so cool to have so many people enjoy something that I created and celebrate that moment with them.

What animal best represents you and why?

I don’t necessarily have a spirit animal or anything like that but my friends do tell me that I look like the worms/annelids from Men in Black.

Favorite TV Show

My favorite TV show is Whose Line Is It Anyway? I like the earlier seasons the most because there was nothing like it at the time. Without a doubt, my favorite episode is when Ricard Simmons makes a guest appearance.

What’s it like to compete for Coach Ferrell?

Competing for Coach Ferrell has been a blessing for me. Early on in my career, he worked really hard with me and taught me a lot of what he knows. He has put a lot of trust in me as I have gotten older to lead our team and put others before myself.

What’s your favorite part about being a member of Central tennis?

My favorite part of Central tennis has been spending the past four years with the other seniors on the team. We are an oddball group with different personalities but we work so well together and enjoy spending time together.

What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?

In ten years from now, I hope that when I wake up in the morning I am excited to get my day started and I’m genuinely happy. I am unsure what that might look like but nor do I want to think about that, I just want to live in the moment and embrace/be thankful for the life I have.

Favorite food from Central Market

My favorite food from the Central Market would have to be spaghetti bake or anything with meat sauce. Unfortunately, being the big Kansas City BBQ guy that I am, the Central Market doesn’t make any beef brisket that I am in love with. Joes Kansas City and Q39 in my eyes are still untouchable when It comes to beef brisket.

Bucket list
Visit all 7 continents
Visit all 50 states
Be my own boss/own my own business
17. Study Abroad London

In the fall of 2019 I had the opportunity to study abroad in London. This was definitely a life changing experience for me because I really learned a lot about myself throughout the process as well as the world around me. While studying at the University of Roehampton, I was able to have lots of different experiences and opportunities provided to me. One really cool thing that came from my experience was playing on the University club tennis team. Being able to be on the team gave me a new set of friends and an instant connection that made the experience that much better. It was really neat to travel to different towns outside of the London city center to play and meet other teams with players from all over the world. In addition to sports, it was very easy to travel to places like Venice, Rome, Amsterdam and Budapest. This is an experience that not a lot of people have been able to have at such an early age and this is something I will forever cherish.
