Sophomore
Manhattan, Kansas
Why did you choose Central?
I chose Central because I knew I wanted to go to a small school and that it would give me an opportunity to build one on one relationships with my professors. I took advantage of the exercise science visit day, saw what the program had to offer, noted the professor’s passion for the subject and knew that Central was a perfect fit for me.
Favorite professor and why?
All of the professors I have had while I have been here at Central are great, but if I had to choose a single favorite one, it would be Dr. Huisman. He is able to take complicated concepts and make them simple to grasp, he always has helpful analogies, and he tells some pretty funny jokes. I really enjoy that he starts Friday classes with funny videos.
Who are your go-to musical artists?
My go to musical artist are the Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and Florence and the Machine
You’re majoring in _______ because?
I chose to major in exercise science because I wanted to go the prehealth route and felt it would give me a more hands on experience than chemistry or biology would have.
Describe your perfect pizza?
When in Italy, I visited Pompeii and on the way back stopped in Naples and had the best pizza ever. It was a margherita pizza cooked over a wood fired grill. Simple, nothing but the freshest ingredients and it used buffalo mozzarella cheese.
Favorite sport other than track and field
My favorite sport other than track is definitely volleyball. I played this in high school and really miss it. Thankfully I have intramural sand volleyball here to fill my need to still compete in this sport.
If you joined the circus, what would you perform?
I would be a trapeze artist. I did gymnastics for seven years and would enjoy flying through the air and tumbling like I did when I released myself after an uneven bar routine.
Describe the worst haircut you've ever had?
I had so many bad hair cuts as a kid; my mom used to cut my hair for me, and thought I always needed bangs. So, from the age of 2 – 5 years old it looked like I had a mullet.
If you woke up morning and found yourself to be invisible, what would be the first things you did?
I have always wanted to swim with sharks. But, having seen so many scary shark movies, I know that even in a shark cage, I would be terrified. Invisibility might make this dangerous activity relatively safe enough for me to give it a shot.
If you had to be stranded on an island with one member from your team, who would it be and why?
If I were ever stuck on an island with someone from the track team I would want it to be Lexi Engen, because she has been my roommate for two years now and I know we would get along. We would probably just laugh at each other the whole time, and she would turn the bad situation into something fun. Not only would I want her there as a companion, but she knows how to throw javelin so maybe if I made her a spear she could get something for us to eat, and she is a biology major so she could possibly identify some plants we could eat.
Favorite TV Show
My favorite TV show is Friends. I have probably watched every episode four times and it still never gets old.
What’s one thing people might not know about Coach Sturman?
It really surprised me to find out that Coach Sturman did not participate in track himself. He is such an amazing coach that it caught me off guard. I also think he would make a pretty good DJ.
What’s your favorite part about being a member of Central track and field?
Track is something I have always enjoyed doing and being a part of the team at Central is amazing. Everyone is very supportive and I like to think of it as more of a family than a team. I also like that track isn’t the most serious sport, and we can have fun and joke around at practice while still being able to accomplish whatever needs to be done.
“Ten years from now I’ll...”
I hope to be a certified Occupational Therapist specializing in pediatrics, and taking time to travel all over Europe and the rest of the world.
Favorite food from Central Market
My favorite food hands down are the double chocolate chip cookies, on fresh cookie Tuesday.
Bucket list
I know I want to travel the world, but a few other things I really want to do are scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef, watch the Aurora Borealis, and skydive.
